"Representing Those Who
Work the Toughest Beat in the State"

RIBCO members are the mainstay of a talented, professional, and dedicated work force here at the ACI. The commitment displayed, day in and day out, by our members, results in a work force, which has demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity, while still accomplishing their mission of public safety for the citizens of our state.

The men and women who wear Rhode Island’s Gray, and the support staff, who enter our facilities daily, are consummate professionals. Their efforts in our cellblocks, modules and dormitories have made Rhode Island’s prison system one of the finest in the country.

"The Toughest Beat"

Overcrowding and understaffing are commonplace in today’s prison and that is true here in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island’s Correctional Officers are forced (“frozen in”) to work mandatory overtime between 800 and 1,000 times per year.

The rate of infectious diseases (Hepatitis, TB, AIDS, etc.) is 7 times greater behind the walls than on the street.

Assaults on staff are up 30% since 1998.

On average, more than 16,000 State Correctional Officers are assaulted every year.

Every day in this country 88 Correctional Officers are assaulted.

Most of these assaults require medical attention – some of these assaults result in death.

In the last four years 39 Correctional Officers have been killed in the line of duty.
